1. Online job boards are the only place to find a job 

Online job boards such as indeed.com, monster.com, or LinkedIn are excellent places to start your job search. But you shouldn’t rely solely on those sites to find a job.

The fact is, only about 15% of jobs get filled by candidates who apply through job board listings. Also, upwards of 70% of all jobs are never even listed to any site.

The best way to search for a job is to use your network. Surveys reveal that 85% of people have landed jobs through networking.

2. You don’t need a cover letter 

A well-crafted cover letter gives you an opportunity to highlight specific skills that could help you stand apart from the competition. Your cover letter is also a great place to tell your potential employer why you want to work for them.

Almost half of hiring managers have said a strong cover letter helped convince them to interview a candidate with an otherwise lackluster resume. Another 18% of hiring managers said they’ve outright rejected candidates with weak cover letters.

3. Don’t apply unless you meet all requirements listed

When hiring managers write job descriptions, they include the requirements that they’d want their dream candidate to have. In reality, they aren’t expecting every candidate to check off all of the boxes.

So, if you a see a job description where you may not meet all of the requirements, don’t write it off. If you meet about 70% to 80% of the job requirements, then go for it.

4. You should apply to as many jobs as possible 

While you don’t have to meet every requirement listed in a job description, remember to be realistic as well. Applying to every single job—including those that are clearly out of reach is a waste of your time and energy. It will only lead to frustration and disappointment on your end.

Applying to every job could also give you a false believe that you are not a desirable candidate.

You’ll find yourself thinking: “I’ve applied to hundreds of jobs and have gotten no response. What’s wrong with me?”

Again, focus on applying to jobs where you meet most of the job requirements listed to increase your chances of landing an interview.

5. You should write multiple versions of your resume

Recruiters and hiring managers are receiving hundreds if not thousands of job applications for a single position these days. They are extremely busy trying to keep up with the workload.

If a few weeks have gone by without a response, don’t just assume you’ve been passed over. A quick, polite follow-up email to the recruiter or hiring manager may prompt them to give your resume another glance and serve as a reminder that they owe you a response.

7. Companies slow their hiring efforts during the summer and the holidays 

Once upon a time, common wisdom had told us that applying for a job from November to December, and from June to August, was a wasted effort.

But that thinking is now considered old-fashioned. Do many firms slow down hiring efforts during the holidays and summer months? Yes, but it doesn’t come to a dead halt.

If there are positions that need to be filled, companies are hiring no matter what time of year it is. That’s why your job search should continue all year long.

Also, consider the fact that many job seekers do buy into this myth and press pause on their job search efforts during the typically “slow months.” That means, there’s less competition around the holidays and the summer, which only increases the chances you’ll land an interview.

8. Work experience alone will help you land the job 

Your work experience is part of the equation when it comes to job search success, but you must remember that hiring managers are looking for so much more.

Your resume may tell hiring managers how long you’ve worked, but it doesn’t tell them if you are the right person for the role they are looking to fill. That has to come through in the job interview. Be ready to demonstrate that you are honest, passionate, curious, motivated, and committed.

9. You should use ChatGPT to write your resume

We can admit that there are some advantages to using ChatGPT to assist with resume creation. Mainly, it can generate a decent rough draft for you to work from.

But you don’t want to rely solely on ChatGPT or any or other artificial intelligence software to create the final version of your resume for several reasons. For example, ChatGPT can introduce errors into your resume and strip your resume of your unique communication style.

Also, an increasing number of employers are using AI-detection programs to weed out ChatGPT-generated resumes. According to a recent study, 11% of the jobseekers surveyed were removed from job consideration after their interviewer learned that the jobseeker used ChatGPT to create their resume.

That may seem like a small percentage, but that number is only going to grow as detection programs get more sophisticated. Besides, the job market is so competitive, why take a chance?

10. You’ll never find a job 

It can be all too easy to think you’re never going to find a job—especially after you’ve been searching for several months. But it does take a long time to find a job and a negative attitude will not improve your chances.

If you’re not having any luck, take stock of your transferable skills that could put you ahead of the competition. Are you an excellent communicator? Do you excel at time management? Are you overlooking leadership skills that should be highlighted in your resume?

Consider expanding your search to include other industries. For example, you may be excellent at pharmaceutical sales, but would you consider a career in software sales? You may have a ton of retail banking experience, but maybe you could work in the insurance industry.

Think about if your resume might need a makeover as well. Most importantly, never give up on your job search. The right job is out there for you.
