Amazon Military Transitioning Programs
If you ask Jeff Bezos what one of his goals is, he’ll tell you that he wants Amazon to become the “World’s Best Employer.” In doing so, the e-commerce giant is hiring over 100,000 military veterans and military spouses by the year 2024.
Because Amazon recognizes the unique talents of the military community, the company focuses its efforts on developing military talent through transitioning programs, specifically designed to help veterans transition into the civilian sector. Today’s article from Empire Resume will explore Amazon Military Transitioning Programs.
Amazon’s Upskilling and Reskilling Initiative
Upskilling and reskilling for veterans is more important now than ever before and can make a difference in the success of military members once they leave the U.S. Armed Forces.
In fact, LinkedIn’s Veteran Opportunity Report estimates that 55% of veterans want a career change once they leave the military.
If you’re a servicemember who falls into the above category of Veterans with the desire to work at Amazon, familiarize yourself with Amazon Web Services, the entity that many career opportunities for servicemembers fall under.
Amazon Web Services’ Commitment to the Military Community
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world’s most comprehensive cloud platform. Millions of companies, including the fastest-growing startups, largest enterprises, and leading government agencies, trust AWS to power their infrastructure, become more agile, and lower their costs.
Over the years, AWS created several programs focused on engaging the military community, helping them gain valuable skills, and develop successful careers in the high-demand field of cloud computing at Amazon.
AWS is where careers in the cloud begin. AWS’s skill gap training and apprenticeship programs help transitioning service members and spouses develop skills to prepare them for roles within AWS data centers. Here’s how:
- Giving 29 million people with free access to cloud computing skills training by the year 2025 through AWS Educate and AWS re/Start, which you’ll learn about below.
- The AWS Amazon Warriors affinity group. This group provides an internal network for those who have served and offers career development and social programs to help veterans and family members succeed in the civilian workforce.
- Reimbursable training. AWS is committed to helping servicemen and women advance their post-military careers. By partnering with the VA, AWS made training and certification exam fees eligible for VA reimbursement under any GI Bill with an education provision. Programs for Active and Transitioning Servicemembers at Amazon
The below programs from Amazon will help you switch careers and start a new employment path:
Amazon Technical Apprenticeship Program
The Amazon Technical Apprenticeship program helps members of the military community transition to careers in cloud computing. Even without previous technical experience, you’ll gain valuable skills through a paid training course combined with on-the-job training to best prepare for a cloud technology career at Amazon.
The career paths offered include associate cloud consultant, cloud support associate, data center technician, solutions architect, software development engineer, support engineer, technical account manager, and technical sales. Each training course lasts anywhere from 10 to 18 weeks.
All apprenticeship training courses are followed by up to 12 months of paid, on-the-job training that will bring your military skills and experience to life.
Amazon Military SkillBridge Program (AMSB)
Remember hearing about the DoD SkillBridge Program? Amazon has also partner with DoD in providing employment opportunities for Veterans.
The Amazon Military SkillBridge Program was launched to provide fellowship and apprenticeship opportunities for military members who are separating within 180 days of service. The goal is to train and extend full time job offers to AMSB participants, just in time for their military transition into the civilian sector.
Before applying for the program, you should obtain verbal approval from your chain of command. To learn more about AMSB and its application process, register for an Amazon military affairs webinar.
AWS Educate
AWS Educate supports U.S. veterans, transitioning military personnel, and their spouses with access to the cloud resources needed to pursue jobs in the high-demand, cloud computing space. As a Veteran participant, you’ll receive access to AWS Promotional Credit, cloud computing resources, and the option to learn skills based on a desired career path.
AWS re/Start
AWS re/Start is a no cost, full-time, classroom-based skills development and training program that prepares individuals for careers in the cloud and connects them to potential employers.
Don’t worry, a technology background is not required to apply. Through scenario-based learning, hands-on labs, and coursework, you’ll gain the technical and soft skills you need for an entry-level cloud role. AWS re/Start also provides learners with resume and interview coaching to prepare them for employer meetings and interviews.
Amazon Delivery Service Partner Program
Interested in being your own boss?
The Amazon Delivery Service Partner (DSP) Program provides an incubator for transitioning service members, veterans, and military family members who are ready to become business owners.
The opportunity is ideal for those who are looking to run a full-time business, have experience coaching teams, and are comfortable in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
Amazon will help you get started by providing a $10,000 Diversity Grant to qualified applicants. If you’ve ever wanted to own your own business, this may be a perfect opportunity for you!
AWS Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing Program
The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing Certificate Course is a no cost, two-day training course on fiber optic installation and repair.
The course teaches how to repair and test fiber optic cables, which require specialized knowledge. Fiber optic cables are the backbone of the modern world, carrying internet, TV, and telephone data. Fiber optic cables are made up of tiny glass tubes, which makes repairing and testing them specialized work.
Through lectures and hands-on lessons, students gain knowledge of real-world deployment techniques ranging from hand tools to state-of-the-art automated fusion splicing technology. AWS is also eyeing virtual learning opportunities for this program in the future.
Currently, the AWS Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing program is about to be hosted for the first time on a military base, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington on November 8 – 9, 2021. In March 2022, the program will be held at Blue Mountain Community College.
