That’s why organizations focus their efforts on supporting the military community in transitioning from military service back to civilian life.

Today, we’ll point out one initiative that works tirelessly to offer transitioning service members much-needed resources, information, and guidance when it comes to job hunting strategies and workforce solutions. That initiative is Hiring Our Heroes (HOH), established in 2011 by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The mission at Hiring Our Heroes is to “connect the military community – service members, military spouses, and veterans — with American businesses to create economic opportunity and a strong and diversified workforce.” They focus on bridging the military-civilian gap by offering top-notch programs. Do you know how this dynamic program got its start? Hiring events!

HOH-sponsored hiring events connect military job seekers from around the world with American companies hiring for local, national, and remote opportunities.

Since its inception, HOH has hosted more than 1,400 hiring events in more than 50 countries. Many of the events take place on military installations, but they are also offered online. And if you plan to attend, Hiring Our Heroes will even help you prepare.

Each registrant is partnered with an HOH Career Connector who will review your resume, provide tips for making the most of your job search, and share employment resources.

Internships and Fellowship Programs at Hiring Our Heroes

Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program

Hiring Our Heroes’ internship programs range from 6 to 12 weeks and connect service members, military spouses, and military caregivers with companies like Amazon, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and a host of others that provide experiential opportunities with the goal of hiring. Programs include:

The Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program includes an innovative 12-week program that provides transitioning servicemembers with professional training and hands-on experience in the civilian workforce. The professional development prepares candidates for a smooth transition into meaningful civilian careers. 90% of fellows receive a job offer after/during their fellowships.

The Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Fellowship Program (MSFP) connects career-ready military spouses to exceptional professional opportunities. This cutting-edge program provides military spouses with professional training, networking, and hands-on experience in the civilian workforce. The MSFP has an 88% job offer rate from over 150 companies, with an average starting salary of $65,000.

The Hiring Our Heroes Caregiver Fellowship Program is a 6-week experience that provides caregivers of wounded warriors the opportunity to obtain professional training, networking, and hands-on experience.

Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program

The HOH career summits connect transitioning servicemembers, veterans, military spouses, and military caregivers with military-ready employers. These interactive on-base events feature local, regional, and national employers and typically include workshops, panel discussions, and a career fair.

Career Forward at HOH

If you’re looking for reskilling and upskilling opportunities, Career Forward is for you!

Career Forward is a 3 to 6 month, part-time, learner-to-earner program that helps transitioning servicemembers (within one year of separation), military spouses, and veterans “level up” in their careers.

Through Career Forward, you can gain skills through a Google Career Certificate in data analytics, IT support, project management, or user experience (UX) design.

Once you’ve earned your certificate, you will gain access to support such as interview prep and workshops. Additionally, you’ll connect with ready-to-hire employers such as Verizon, Google, and Booz Allen Hamilton, just to name a few.

Resources for Military Spouses at HOH

HOH has two primary initiatives specifically for military spouses:

  • Military Spouse Professional Network: The MSPN provides military spouses with career development and networking opportunities in more than 55 military communities across the globe. The network gives the spouses access to local business leaders, peers, mentors, and support.
  • AMPLIFY: AMPLIFY is a 2-day event that leads a cohort of military spouses through intensive career preparation, professional development, and networking. Event attendees walk away with a polished resume, professional photo, an impressive LinkedIn profile, and a professional network for a lifetime.

Supporting military spouses in their employment endeavors are just as important. As stated in a recent article by the Federal News Network, military spouse unemployment is an issue for 43% of active-duty families. And according to research from the Department of Defense and Hiring Our Heroes Foundation, unemployment rates for military spouses far exceed that of the national average.
