Understanding Military Rank Series: Coast Guard Ranks
Welcome to Empire Resume’s six-part mini-series on understanding military rank, where we’re giving you the blueprint to rank for each branch of the military.
Today, we’re sharing the U.S. Coast Guard ranks and showing how they stack up to their civilian equivalent. Afterwards, we’ll briefly discuss what the Coast Guard is and what Coast Guard ranks are. Below is a chart containing each Coast Guard rank along with accompanying job titles in today’s workforce:
What is the Coast Guard?
According to the official Coast Guard website, the Coast Guard serves as America’s maritime first responder with jurisdiction in domestic and international waters. As a part of U.S. Homeland Security, it protects our economic, national and border security.
Historically, the Coast Guard has been assigned to the Department of Treasury, Navy, and Transportation. It is comprised of the Active-Duty Coast Guard and Coast Guard Reserve.
What are Coast Guard Ranks?
If you saw our series on Navy Ranks, you’ll notice that the Coast Guard rank is the exact same as the Navy’s.
The U.S. Coast Guard uses a rank structure to identify Coast Guard members, known as Coasties, and reflect their levels of aptitude, training, experience, knowledge, skill, and responsibility. Rank is how Coasties progress in their military careers as well.
